Operation Safe Driver Week Begins July 13

Law enforcement agencies across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico will be closely monitoring commercial and passenger vehicle drivers from July 13-19 as part of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) Operation Safe Driver Week. This annual event focuses on improving driving behaviors through a combination of educational initiatives, traffic enforcement strategies, and interactions between officers and drivers.

During Operation Safe Driver Week, law enforcement officers will increase their efforts to identify drivers engaging in unsafe practices such as speeding, distracted driving, tailgating, not using seat belts, making improper lane changes, and driving while impaired. Drivers who are caught exhibiting these behaviors will be pulled over by law enforcement and may be issued a warning or citation.

This year, particular attention will be given to reckless, careless, or dangerous driving. Reckless driving is defined as operating a vehicle with willful or wanton disregard for the safety of people or property. Careless or dangerous driving involves driving without due care and attention or without reasonable consideration for other motorists or people on the road.

Operation Safe Driver Week is a key component of CVSA’s Operation Safe Driver Program, which provides free downloadable resources for commercial motor vehicle drivers and other motorists, along with public service announcement videos. CVSA is also offering Operation Safe Driver Week postcards free of charge to its industry and enforcement members. The postcards are available in English, French and Spanish.
