CVSA Releases 2025 Brake Safety Week Results

Newly released 2025 Brake Safety Week results from the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) show that 2,296 commercial motor vehicles were placed out of service due to brake-related violations during this year’s annual safety campaign. This represents 15.1% of the 15,175 commercial vehicles inspected across the United States, Canada, and Mexico throughout Brake Safety Week, which was held August 24-30.

According to the Brake Safety Week results, U.S. law enforcement officials conducted 13,700 inspections and placed 2,035 vehicles (14.9%) out of service for brake-related violations. In Canada, 1,459 inspections yielded a 17.8% out-of-service rate (260 vehicles), while in Mexico, 6.3%—1 out of 16 inspected commercial motor vehicles—failed due to brake issues.

The Brake Safety Week results underscore why CVSA dedicates a week each year to brake inspections, enforcement, and education. Brake-related violations continue to be the most frequently cited out-of-service vehicle issue during roadside inspections, and properly functioning brake systems are essential for the safe operation of commercial motor vehicles.

This year’s campaign included an emphasis on brake drum and rotor condition. Inspectors identified 113 drum and rotor violations, with 39 commercial vehicles being placed out of service.

Brake Safety Week is a key component of CVSA’s Operation Airbrake Program, a comprehensive program dedicated to improving commercial motor vehicle brake safety throughout North America. By combining inspection, enforcement, and education, the program aims to ensure that only safe, well-maintained commercial vehicles remain on the road.

The next Brake Safety Week is scheduled for August 23-29, 2026.
